Prequisites and Requirements of Salah

4.3 WHAT IS SAID AFTER THE TASLEEM

It must be stressed that Salat is formally completed after the Tasleem is declared. Hence, there is no additional requirement to be met regarding the prayer proper. However, it is Sunnah  to make zikr and even individual personal supplications immediately after the Salat. Collective or congregational-type supplications after the obligatory prayers, which is fashionable in some circles, are not known to be the established practice of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) after the Salat  has been completed.

The following are only some of the most authentic practices of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) immediately after the obligatory Salat. Upon finishing the Salat, he would say zikr (remembrance of Allah) and du'a (supplication) as follows:

  1. Say Istighfar (Seeking Forgiveness) 3 Times as follows:

Transliteration: Astagfir-rul-lah.

Translation: I seek refuge in Allah

  1. Say this Benediction as Follows:

Transliteration:

Allahum-ma antas-salaam wa minka salaam tabarakta yaa zaljalaali wal ikraam.

Translation:

O Allah, You are Peace, and from You comes Peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of Majesty and Honour.

  1. Say this Benediction Followed Immediately by the Du'a:

Transliteration:

Laa ilaha ilal-lahu wahdahu laa sharikalahu lahul mulk wa lahulhamd wa huwa ala kulli shai-in qadeer. Allahum-ma laa maani-a lima 'atait, wa laa mana-'at, wa laa yanfa-u zal jadi minkal jadd.

Translation:

There is no god but Allah who is alone and has no partner, His is the kingdom and the praise, He has power to do all that he wills. O Allah, nobody can hold back what You give, and nobody can give what You hold back, and a fortune does not benefit its owner against You.

  1. Say this Du'a (Supplication)[1] 3 Times as follows:

Transliteration:

Allahum-ma a-'inni alaa zikrika wa shukrika wa husni 'ibaadatik.

Translation:

O Allah, aid me in Your remembrance, Your thanks, and in perfecting Your worship.

(To be continued)

[1]  This supplication is strongly recommended as supported by the following tradition: "One day the Prophet (pbuh) took Mu'adh ibn Jabal's hand and said to him: 'O Mu'adh, I love you.' Mu'adh responded: 'May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah, I love you.' Then the Prophet (pbuh) said: 'I advise you, O Mu'adh, to say at the end of every prayer…'" (From the same sources noted).
